I DON’T DO LANDFILLS
Compostable means renewable resources are used and the product can break down in a shorter amount of time and adds nutrients to the earth. OneCoffee is now certified 100% compostable by BPI, who is one of the forerunners for compostable certification. OneCoffee breaks down a lot faster than the international standard of 180 days! Our pod will break down in a city green bin program/commercial compost, in municipalities where approved. Commercial composts are a managed process, where they add just the right amount of moisture, heat and regularly turn the compost to ensure even and continuous degradation. The OneCoffee pod is made of plant-based materials and will enrich the soil. And that fertile soil can be used to grow more crops!
NO FERTILE SOIL CREATED
Biodegradable products break down like compostable products but will not add nutrients to the Earth. No fertile soil created and actually, the materials entering the soil mail or may not be toxic! The amount of time is unspecified, which means biodegradable products can take multiple months, or even years to degrade!
(In Canada, products that are not 100% compostable need to be called biodegradable.)
REQUIRES MORE ENERGY
It’s not easy to recycle recyclable pods; the foil needs to be removed, the coffee needs to be composted and the container rinsed and then put into the recycling bin. At the recycling facility, they are sorted and processed to be reused.
At best, plastic pellets are then shipped to companies that can melt and reform into other useful objects. This requires more energy and resources.
But, actually a lot of our recycled plastics gets shipped overseas – to China to reform and reuse.
